World Championship in Olive Picking

World Championship in Olive Picking

to
Postira

After a very successful first edition of the World Olive Picking Championship in 2017, the Municipality of Postira Tourist Board and the Postira Agricultural Cooperative are organising the second consecutive World Olive Picking Championship! It is an event that will take place from 11 to 14 October 2018 in Postira, on the island of Brač, with the aim of promoting olive growing and everything linked to it. Participants will be Mediterranean countries with a tradition in olive oil production but also others which have no olive tree but which are connected with olives and olive oil.
Last year, Postira hosted teams from nine countries – Italy, Slovenia, Hungary, Greece, Montenegro, The Netherlands, France, New Zealand and domestic Croatia (Postira and Dol inhabitants). The absolute winner of the 1st World Olive Picking Championship was the Croatian National Team with 107.6 kg of olives picked. The second place was taken by the Dutch Team whilst the third place was the Hungarian Team, with the latter two teams both coming from countries where no olives are actually grown. At the festive evening of proclamation of winners, the winners stone medals were awarded by the County of Split and Dalmatia's Prefect, Mr Blaženko Boban as the envoy of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia, Mr Andrej Plenković.
This year the national teams of participant countries will count four members (two women and two men members), whilst the categories in which they will measure their strengths are traditional picking “na sakete” and modern picking (using shakers and rakes). Besides the competition part, workshops will be organised, as well as tastings, tours and entertaining evenings in order to experience Postira, the eco-ethno village Dol but also the island of Brač itself, in the best way thus enriching the tourist post-season.
