Desde el verano que viene debería comenzar a volar desde Split, Dubrovnik, Sibenik, Zadar, Rijeka y Pula hacia las grandes islas del Adriático, el primer hidroavión de la empresa alemana European Coastal Airlines (ECA).

Se trata de un proyecto de tráfico aéreo costero del Adriático con el que las islas estarían conectadas con la red de corredores aéreos, continentales y marítimos del viejo continente. En la primera fase, se construirán aeropuertos para hidroaviones, se comprarán las naves y se formará a un fiable transportista aéreo. Los inversores de Alemania y Suiza tienen previsto invertir como mínimo 31 millones de euros.

ECA tiene previsto en esta primera fase conectar Split y Dubrovnik con Korčula y Hvar, Vis, Lastovo y demás islas de la zona, con seis naves de 19 asientos. Más al norte quieren conectar Sibenik, Zadar, Rijeka y Pula con Mali Losinj, Rab y otras islas dálmatas. Para despegar y aterrizar la nave se utilizarían 30 puertos marinos.

En la segunda fase las islas se conectarán con las ciudades italianas de Brindisi , Bari, Foggia, Ancona, Rimini, Ravenna, Bologna, Padova, Trieste y Venecia.

Desde Ancona a Mali Losinj el vuelo durará sólo 32 minutos, y desde Pescare hasta Vis 42 minutos.
