Picturesque heritage of the village idyll

Several villages, imbued with history and culture, are situated in the wonderful surroundings of dense forests, meadows and ploughed fields along the river Drava. In the 13th century, when the Hungarian-Croatian King Bela IV fell from his horse into stinging nettles and called this place Koprivnica (Croatian kopriva = nettle), this plant became the trademark of today’s capital of Podravina and its surroundings. Besides Koprivnica, Podravina also includes the towns of Ludbreg and Đurđevac and the districts of Rasinja, Hlebina and Molve, where you can learn about the heritage of Croatian rural life.

You can find accommodation in one of the farms and start exploring the culture and nature of Podravina. Visit the Franciscan monastery, the Baroque and Secession buildings and the medieval city walls in Koprivnica. During your voyage, don’t bypass Ludbreg, the centre of the world and one of the largest religious centres in Croatia. In the Ludbreg shrine, where the Holy Blood of Christ appeared, you will find the peace and the strength that will follow you on your path imbued with the beauties of the Podravina region.

When in Podravina be sure to take one of many wine roads, where besides the specialties of rural cuisine, you will be able to enjoy premium wine sorts, such as Traminac, Rizling and Graševina, still produced in the traditional way. Besides the good wine, numerous wine cellars will tell you the story of its history and origin, so that you can completely absorb the Podravina culture.

Cycling is a very popular past time in Podravina, so popular that the centre of the town Koprivnica has the first monument dedicated to cycling. Furthermore, an open air museum enables you to ride a bike and see bicycle replicas, from the first one made by Leonardo da Vinci to today’s models. The Drava route and Bilodravska route are long routes that will leave breathless all those who decide to take an adventurous ride along the numerous river backwaters and channels.
