Historical walls in the Empire of Wine

Pelješac, the second largest Croatian peninsula, stretches along the southern part of Croatia. It is protected by the magnificent walls of the town of Ston, from where you can see Korčula, the island of wonderful natural beauties and a long agricultural tradition. Try the world famous wines of this sunny area, learn about the strong connection among the culture, history and the Middle Ages, all that along with an abundant choice for an active holiday.

You can taste the developed winemaking tradition by trying different sorts of smooth white wines from Korčula or the excellent red wines from Pelješac. Visit the sunny vineyards full of top-quality grapes and find out more about the thousand-year-long tradition of making premium quality wines on the themed trail The Empire of Wine on Pelješac.

Explore the rich history of various cultures at the sites reminiscent of ancient times; from the prehistoric site of Vela Špilja, the museum of the great merchant Marco Polo, to the magnificent Renaissance Cathedral of St. Mark, the diverse architecture and culture convey life as it once was. Many captains’ houses in Orebić witness the maritime tradition of the town, which was famous for the greatest number of captains in Croatia in the 19th century. The walls of Ston, the longest in Europe and the second longest in the world, represent the most impressive monument of the past. These five and a half kilometre long walls, adorned by towers and fortresses have been standing for nearly four centuries.

Besides the wine and the culture, the pleasant Mediterranean climate invites recreationists and active athletes to engage in many exciting activities at sea or on land. Ride the waves, conquer mountain peaks or take a ride on one of the many bike routes.

The diverse and first-class offer of accommodation reflects the hospitality of the local inhabitants. Pick a hotel or an apartment, camp out at one of the interesting sites, and if you arrive with your own boat, berth in one of the available marinas.

Enrich your experience of the warm southern parts of Croatia by visiting some events, such as the gripping Ston Wall Marathon, the exciting Viganj games Rozarijada or the traditional dance moreška accompanied by the songs of the Dalmatian a cappella groups called klapa.
