Emerald fields and rocks of central Croatia

If you haven’t yet peaked into the mysterious rocky grounds, where the rhythm of water has carved special forms and given life to the forest, it is time to visit the emerald part of continental Croatia, explore the strength of nature, the tumultuous history and the power and spirit of its population. All routes connecting the Croatian land and the sea pass through this emerald destination. The fairy-tale landscape of Ogulin, the valley of Plitvice Lakes, Rakovica and the mills on the babbling cascades of the Slunjčica, the Mrežnica, the Korana, the Dobra, the Dretulja and the Tounjčica will not leave you indifferent.

Klek, the cradle of the Croatian hiking and alpinism, dominates the west side. Its form and vistas have always fired the imagination of travellers and inhabitants, the most famous being Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, one of the greatest of Croatia’s female writers. The mountain chains Velika Kapela and Mala Kapela, abundant in flora and fauna, easily connect and veil this rocky ground and reveal the secret of the underground of the Plitvice valley. The Rakovica and Barać Caves uncover the power of the art of water in the rocks, and hide the uniqueness of the underground world in their mystical halls. The ancient way of life and the transfer of natural wealth to man can best be experienced in the watermill village of Rastoke, a harmonious corner with an historical, ethnographic and architectural cultural heritage.

This area has been at the junction of cultures and trade, but also conflicts and defence for ages. There are many remains of the turbulent past – the sites of the Iapodes, the Frankopan fortress, the borders of the medieval Military Frontier, the Napoleon magazine in Slunj, the Rakovica rebellion and strong personalities that marked the Croatian history.

Come and explore, there are numerous possibilities for rest and activities, while the hosts in your accommodation capacities and catering facilities will make your holiday complete. You also have many sports fields at your disposal and special organised adrenaline experiences.
