Vukovar – An archaeological-tourist attraction
At the archaeological site Vučedol, the centre of one of the oldest European cultures, the building of the Vučedol culture museum is coming to an end and by the end of next year a whole archaeological tourist park should be completed.

The museum and archaeological content will be enriched with sports and recreation facilities and an astronomical observatory and planetarium which will certainly make Vučedol an interesting tourist destination. This new attire of Vučedol is part of the project Renovation of the cultural heritage of Ilok – Vučedol – Vukovar, worth 30 million euros, that is mostly being financed by the Development bank of the European Council.

Along with the Vučedol culture museum, which is literally interred into the mountain with the archaeological site on top of the mountain, Ilok`s Odescalchi castle has also been renovated. Renovations are being carried out on the Eltz castle in Vukovar and a few baroque buildings have also been restored. At the same time works are being done on the walking trails and river embankment at the mouth of the rivers Vuka into Dunav up to Vučedol which is in the velocity of Vukovar in eastern Slavonija.

The tourist-hospitality and sporting and recreation area is composed of a hotel, a restaurant, bungalows, sporting grounds, water sports, fishing, small tourist ports, biking trails, a hippodrome, gastronomic offers, tourist manifestations, a zoo and an aquarium.
For guests and tourists there would be presentations of archaeological experiments, for example the building of a Vučedol house, pottery and moulds for the casting of metal objects.

Archaeological and tourist park Vučedol will have a research centre in villa Streim near which three Vučedol houses will be reconstructed and built from twigs and mud and covered with reeds, then stilt houses (sojenica), pier, zoo with domestic and wild animals, and workshops of old crafts. A playground for children, a tourist camp and a souvenir shop are also anticipated.

The archaeological site Vučedol is located along the bank of Dunav, 5 km downstream from Vukovar and it is one of the most important sites of Eneolithic period.
Vučedol was first inhabited around 6000 BC, at the time of the appearance of the first European farmers. The time between 3000-2200 BC was the most intense period of its existence. During its days of glory, the Vučedol culture stretched across a large area with a width of 700 km which included ten European states of today: the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Albania. Pottery especially stands out in the material culture and its outstanding technological quality and aesthetic values speak of a highly developed civilization. Vučedol ceramics draw attention with a perfect harmony of shape and placement of decorations. The most famous example is the Vučedol Dove, a cult pot in the shape of a bird and richly incrusted, which was found in 1938.

The Vučedol Orion, which is considered to be the oldest European calendar, also belongs to the Vučedol culture.
