Mali Lošinj – Underwater fishing and New Year`s Eve
An underwater fishing competition has been held for more than half a century in the waters around Lošinj, and besides its long tradition, the competition is special because it is held just before New Year’s Eve. Back in 1959, the enthusiasts of the local underwater fishing association ‘Udice’(fish-hooks) came up with the idea to hold the competition at this time of the year, while the rest of Europe is covered in snow and in this way draw attention to the mild Mediterranean climate that Lošinj is so famous for.

The benefits of the Lošinj climate were recognised a long time ago and this island can be proud of the fact that this year it will celebrate 125 years of health tourism. With more than 2600 hours of sunshine a year or on average 7 hours of sunshine a day, Mali Lošinj is among the sunniest areas in Croatia.

The underwater fishing competition is held in the waters around Lošinj and the most interesting part is the arrival of participants and the weighing of the catch in the sports hall. During the weighing visitors can buy a lottery ticket and after the announcement of the winners they can take home a fine example of the caught fish.

The monument to the underwater fisherman on one of the city squares proves just how much the people of Lošinj have taken to this sport.

For all lovers of the sea, nature, sports and good fun, Mali Lošinj is an ideal place for celebrating New Year`s Eve. It is the largest island town on the Adriatic. It impresses visitors with its numerous churches and works of art, among which the 2000 year old antique bronze statue of the Greek athlete Apoksiomen stands out especially because it was recently found in the waters of Lošinj.

Walking paths follow the coastline of the island and pass through numerous bays and hundreds of years old pine forests which connect Mali Lošinj to Veli Lošinj. Here we have numerous old churches, a tower built in the 15th century to protect the port from pirate attacks, the fishermen`s port Rovenska with a beautiful beach, break-water and a fishing town atmosphere, the park forest and the amazing climate health facility ‘Podjavori’.
Along numerous sports activities, visitors can also make trips to the nearby islands and participate in organised fishing and diving trips.
