Pula – Former shelters become a tourist attraction
Underground tunnels in Pula, which were formerly used as shelters during air raids, are becoming a new tourist attraction of this Istrian city, famous before all, for its Roman amphitheatre Arena. Recently opened for the public was the old Austro-Hungarian underground tunnel close to Dvojna Vrata in the town centre. For now, tourists can tour about 400 of the 900 metre tunnel as well as the central hall from which two more tunnels branch off. In the tunnel, which is governed by the History Museum of Istria, depending on the season, the temperature varies from 14 degrees to a comfortable 18 or 19 degrees Celsius during summer days. The corridors are three to six meters wide and around two and a half metres high. Pula has a network of about 50 km of underground tunnels built in the time when this city was the main war harbour of the former monarchy.
