Carnival madness in Croatia

In addition to being competitors on the football field, we also represent a serious competition to Brazilians in partying, masking and entertaining.
As the proud owner of multiple world football championship titles, Brazil is often a synonym for outstanding football. If your first association with this South American country is the likes of Ronaldo, Neymar, Hulk or football, we are certain we know what is your second association - Carnival!
We do not know whether we are up to the Brazilians' standard on the football field, but when it comes to partying, masking and entertaining, we surely present dangerous competition.
For instance, during the Carnival in Rijeka, a pearl of the northern Adriatic, in one place, you will meet Smurfs, dragons, walking ice creams and maybe even some world-famous football players. The sounds of whistles, vuvuzelas and other football fan paraphernalia can disappear when confronted by the traditional bellringers who chase the winter and welcome spring.
In early August, the summer evenings in Senj will not be further warmed by the hot sounds of samba, however you will be charmed by the unique local traditional songs which you will be able to hear througout the seven-day reign of unusual masks during the international Senj carnival.
Surely, the Carnival champions of continental Croatia are Samoborians whose carnival has a hundred year tradition. Once upon a time, local jokers full of carnival joy caused headaches to fathers by teasing their daughters, but today in Samobor one can get a headache only by drinking a little bit too much during the carnival madness.
What would have the carnival been, had it not been taking place in the hometown of Marin Držić, the most famous Croatian playwright? Dubrovnik carnival is the time when the entire city becomes a playful stage and when no one is spared from the moderate teasing.
It is not difficult to find the mask for oneself in one of the many Croatian carnivals. Who knows, maybe for at least one day, you may become the world's most famous football player!
