Auf der Rangliste der Kongressveranstaltungsorte gehört Kroatien nicht mehr zu den Schlusslichtern. Dies belegen auch die Daten der International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), wonach die kroatische Hauptstadt Zagreb im Vorjahr vom Platz 171. auf Rang 79. aufgestiegen ist, wobei dieses Verzeichnis insgesamt 309 Kongressveranstaltungsorten in der ganzen Welt umfasst. Europaweit schneidet Zagreb noch besser ab und nimmt den 42. Platz ein, was vor allem der großen Zahl der im Vorjahr abgehaltenen Veranstaltungen zu verdanken ist, die insgesamt für 159 europäische Reiseziele erfasst wurden.

Im weltweiten Vergleich liegt Kroatien mit 50 internationalen Veranstaltungen auf Platz 40, während die Stadt Zagreb mit 23 internationalen Tagungen landesweit den ersten Platz belegt .

Die Hauptstadt Kroatiens wurde vor kurzem zum Veranstaltungsort der Organisation „European Cities Marketing“ (ECM) im Jahr 2012 gewählt. Hierbei handelt es sich um den Dachverband der europäischen Fremdenverkehrszentralen und Kongressveranstalter.

Die ICCA wurde 1963 von einigen Reiseagenturen gegründet und ist heute einer der wichtigsten internationalen Verbände der Kongressbranche. Dieser Zusammenschluss umfasst alle wichtigsten Kongress- und Eventveranstalter. Die ICCA hat mittlerweile 900 Mitglieder aus 86 Ländern.
