Zagreb – Osrednji mestni trg med 20 najlepšimi v Evropi
Osrednji zagrebški trg, Trg bana Jelačića, je bil v raziskavi enega najbolj popularnih belgijskih blogov stedentripper.com uvrščen med 20 najlepših trgov v Evropi. Približno tisoč uporabnikov bloga je ocenjevalo trge evropskih mest, zagrebški trg pa se je po njihovih ocenah uvrstil na 20. mesto. Prvi na seznamu je bruseljski trg Grand Place (Grote Markt), sledi mu Rdeči trg v Moskvi in trg Stanislas v francoskem mestu Nancy. Med 20 najlepšimi trgi so navedeni tudi: Trafalgar Square v Londonu, Marienplatz v Münchenu, Trg svetega Petra v Rimu in Piazza San Marco v Benetkah. Zagrebčanom je glavni trg v ponos, vsekakor pa je lepo slišati, ko ga med najlepše uvrstijo tudi tisti, ki v Zagrebu ne živijo.

Trgu dominira kip bana Josipa Jelačića, avtorja Dominika Fernkorna, ki je danes obrnjen proti jugu. Ko je leta 1866 prvič postavljen na trg je kip gledal proti severu, oziroma Madžarski. Kip je odstranjen po drugi svetovni vojni – leta 1947, leta 1990 po osamosvojitvi Hrvaške pa je slavnostno ponovno vrnjen na trg. Od leta 1947 do 1990 je bil trg poimenovan Trg republike.

Trg ni bil vedno obkrožen z mestom, ampak je bil prazna poljana pod obzidjem Gradeca in Kaptola, na kateri so živeli prišleki, katerim je bil pristop mestu prepovedan. S širitvijo mesta na Ilico in Staro Vlaško je Trg bana Jelačića postal centralni del mesta.
