Slavonia, with its fertile soil is a rich historical region in the east of Croatia, located between the River Drava in the north, the Sava in the south and the Danube in the east, bordered by Hungary, Bosnia and Hercegovina, and Serbia.
Osijek, the centre of the region, a town that traces its origin back to the time of the Celts and Romans when it was called Mursa, was always on the crossroads of culture and historical movements. In the 17th century during the time of the Habsburgs, in other words the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a great fortress was built along the River Drava, whilst the town was renovated in the baroque style. A special economic and cultural, and thereby urbanistic heyday was experienced in the 19th century.
Slavonia has always been known as the breadbasket of Croatia and an agricultural region.
The preserved forests and fields along the numerous rivers and streams, as well as the historical castles and summer residences are opening space for hunting, fishing and agritourism, as well as holidays in the peace and quiet with delicacies such as Slavonian kulen salami, local wines and the gentle sounds of the tamburitza. In fact, exactly what modern man needs the most today. Therefore, it is no wonder that more and more tourists are visiting this region which has also been profiled as a destination for river cruising.
Lovers of active holidays also have at their disposal many walking, running and cycling trails.
Baranja is especially interesting. This is a naturally separated area between the Drava, Danube and the Hungarian border which boasts the Kopački Rit Nature Park, a natural phenomenon located at the intersection of the Drava and the Danube, with lush and rare flora and fauna – notably its 140 or so bird species. Kopački Rit is one of the largest fluvial-wetland plains in Europe whose appearance depends on the intensity of flooding, the largest spawning ground and nursery for freshwater fish in the Podunavlje region and the most important ornithological reserve in Croatia. Therefore heading off to this natural oasis is already by itself a reward for body and soul.
And when it comes to health, the thermal-mineral water in Bizovac has a favourable effect on psoriasis, chronic rheumatic ailments, injuries to the musculoskeletal system and sporting inquires. In Osijek or Slavonski Brod you can enjoy the selection of wellness treatments, from Finnish saunas to baths in rose petals, apples or even beer.
