The Croatian winner of the European Destination of Excellence for 2014/2015, on the theme of 'Tourism and Local Gastronomy’ was Gornje Međimurje. The aim of the competition was the awarding and promotion of non-traditional tourist destinations that in their tourist offer also included local gastronomy. Beside the wine and food offers, also evaluated were the accommodation offer, the availability of cycling and other thematic trails, excursion offers, offers of culinary events and alike.
You will best get to know this green oasis, which is part of the Mura–Drava–Danube Biosphere Reserve, by riding a bike or walking the many thematic trails. Due to its tidiness and charm many also call this region “The Garden of Croatia”. From this fertile garden you should try dishes prepared from well-known local ingredients: pumpkin seed oil, apples, potatoes or perhaps buckwheat porridge. Meat from a wooden barrel, cottage cheese cones, river perch or Međimurje cheese pie are just some of the famous dishes. Exploring the traditional and healthy ingredients from the field to the table you will experience the old river mills, traditional oil mills or wooden wine presses, and in typical restaurants, family-run wineries and rural tourism the tasting of selected specialities awaits you. After the many activities in nature and the culinary experiences, you will relax best in the thermal spa temple of Sveti Martin.
