Memorable views at the gates of Croatia

The north-western gates of Croatia are situated next to the river Bednja, between the mountains Ivančica and Kalnik and the river Drava. Owing to extremely favourable conditions for life, this area has been inhabited since the 12th century, and has been an important traffic junction since the Roman period. Therefore it is not surprising that it abounds not only in a large number of discovered remains of material heritage, but also archaeological sites such as the caves of Vindija, Punikva near Ivanec and Vilenica near Novi Marof.

Through history the largest city in the region, Varaždin, has developed into a place with rich cultural and historical heritage, and during the reign of the Queen Mary Theresa it was the capital of Croatia. Besides walking along the old streets, you can also take a look into courtyards. The Festival of Varaždin Courtyards opens the doors of hidden corners in the historic city centre to everyone and as a part of the festival, there are showings of the hits from the greatest film festivals.

If you set out from Varaždin in any direction you will find a wonderful collage of castles, museums, churches, winegrowing hills, natural springs and untouched nature in the nearby surroundings. Take a ride on a pedal boat on the lake next to Trakošćan castle and discover the magic of the Lepoglava lace and agate. The best way to round up such a romantic excursion is to try a delicious meal in one of the nearby rural taverns.

If you take a walk through the streets and squares of Varaždin during Špancirfest, at the end of August, you will have the opportunity to experience the pulse of the creative rhythm of artists from all over the world on the largest stage in Croatia. At the time of the oldest Baroque music festival, the Varaždin Baroque Evenings, you can hear the sounds of Bach, Vivaldi and other famous composers on authentic instruments.
