Varaždinske Toplice – The oldest natural health spa in Croatia
Varaždinske Toplice (Varaždin spas) is a charming place on the northeast edge of the Croatian Zagorje (a region located behind a mountain) whose natural gift – a thermal water well – marked its location, gave it its name and ensured the continuity of the healing processes through all cultural periods, from the time of the Roman Empire when the Romans named it Aqua Iasae, until today when it is once again becoming a fashionable spa of the modern thermal riviera.

Proof of tourism in this area dates back to the 3rd century A.D. and it comes in the findings of various coins from the area of Panonia, the Balkans and Italy.

Thanks to archaeological findings and research that has been done since 1953, a complex of Roman public architecture was discovered and recognised as thermal baths from the 2nd century.

It is made up of a bathing section that is composed of a bathing building with pools and a basilica, a forum with arcades located around the main thermal well and a holy ground with the temples on Jupiter, Junona and Minerva. This is one of the best preserved Roman sites in Croatia.

At the time of the Roman Empire, Varaždinske Toplice experienced their golden age but also in later times, the thermal waters with their healing quality, which come from depths of almost 1800 meters, have remained the highlight of the settlement and the reason for health conscious tourists to visit.

The beginnings of the modern health spa in Varaždinske Toplice date back to the 17th century, while at the start of the 19th century they were developed on the basis of medical science and stood shoulder to shoulder with other European health spas.

The Special hospital for medical rehabilitation which holds 1100 beds is also supplied with the thermal waters.

Varaždinske Toplice are located on the northeast edge of the Croatian Zagorje surrounded by green hills and meadows, vineyards, orchards and forests, just above the valley of the river Bednja.
