Kutjevo, located in the northeastern part of the Požega valley, halfway between Požega and Našice, is a city with rich historical heritage which every May marks the visit of Maria Theresa to the city in 1741.
This honor given to their city has not been forgotten by the people of Kutjevo. On the contrary, many events going back three centuries tend to celebrate this important moment in the history of the town, located on the southern slopes of Krndija and Papuk in a narrow valley of the river Kutjevčanka. There is a parade going through the city of historical forces, brass music, and various associations, and in front of the castle Kutjevo there are theatrical performances that will more closely describe life from that time. Visitors can experience the meeting of Francis Baron Trenk and Maria Theresa in Kutjevo in 1741.
Colonel Franjo Trenk, born in Italy, founded the famous unit Pandurs in 1741. which counted more than a thousand soldiers. Pandurs were known as a notorious army from France to the Czech Republic, but no one questioned their bravery and skill of war, indeed the enemy in the same proportion of men had no chance of winning.
The first written records of Kutjevo date back to the 13th century when the Cistercian Monks, commonly known as "white friars" founded an abbey, "Vallis Honesta de Gotho'' in 1232. From that time there is a famous wine cellar and a stone table from the time of Baron Trenk and Empress Maria Theresa that is traditionally kept there.
This land was conquered by the Turks in 1535, and after 150 years of Turkish rule, in 1686. a nobleman, Ivan Josip Babic was enthroned, who in 1698., with the consent of the Emperor Leopold, submitted the estate to the Jesuit order who had in less than two decades renewed the Abbey, built a new parish church and the baroque castle, renovated the basement and especially promoted grape growing and wine production. In the late 19th and early 20th century large vineyards and fuit plantations were raised (the plantation Dragan was at that time the largest in Europe) and made Kutjevo well known in the wine making business all over the world. Kutjevo was famous for its Lipizzaner horses and riding school.
