On the occasion of the World Environment Day, in a number of Croatian tourist resorts, at the beginning of the season, for the 14th consecutive year, blue flags were officially raised. In addition, Croatian beaches this year received an award of the European Commission. Its report states that Croatia’s bathing waters belong to the top of European waters by their cleanliness, bringing them above the European average.
"Blue Flag" is an international environmental program to protect marine and coastal environment aimed at sustainable management and management of the area. The program includes 60-odd countries where tourism is one of the strategic objectives.
The Blue Flag is given only for one season, and a request must be submitted each year in the prescribed manner if this recognition wants to be earned again.
This year the blue flag was received by 116 Croatian beaches and 20 marinas. Most of them, 20, are in the Poreč region, followed by Rovinj and Vrsar with nine. Six flags have been given to beaches in the continental part of the Croatia, of which five are at Zagreb's Jarun.
