Around thirty British tourists, tram lovers and reporters among which were also those from a specialised magazine about trams, recently visited Osijek, in which one of the oldest trams in this part of Europe is still in use for tourist purposes.
The tram from 1928 is a real attraction in Osijek because, unlike other trams in certain European cities, it still has all its original parts and an electric construction which makes it a genuine brand of Osijek. As well as being the first tram in Croatia it started circulating in Osijek in 1883. It was a tram pulled by horses. At that time, the two tram lines connected the two furthest parts of the town and thus started a system of today`s city transport. Around 40 years later, in 1928, the horse pulled tram was replaced by an electric tram due to electrification of the town.
One of the wagons from this first electric tram in Osijek was fully preserved, completely renovated and rendered usable for transport. So, the tram that made life more comfortable and simpler for the people of Osijek more than eight decades ago is still a great attraction on the streets of Osijek today.
The tram is equipped with a wireless sound system and two plasma screens. The uniforms of the driver and the tour guide are replicas from 1926 and just like the wagon they are a part of the sightseeing tour.
