The Spanish specialized "Cruises News Media Group" has declared Croatia and Turkey the best destinations for cruise ships - cruisers in 2009. and they were awarded the prize "Cruise Excellence Awards".
The awards of the '' News Media Group Cruises" are awarded based on the results of a survey of Spanish passengers on cruises, who anonymously graded ports, destinations and shipping companies in 14 categories. So the award for Best International Port in 2009. was won by Venice and Malta, and the same award for 2008. was shared last year by Dubrovnik and Venice. The best entertainment on a ship was provided by, "Quail Travel Group," The Best Luxury Cruising company is "Silversea Cruises", and the MSC Splendida was declared the best ship in the Mediterranean in 2009.
Croatia is an important destination for cruisers, and this segment of tourism is growing, as indicated by the Central Bureau of Statistics which shows the number of travelers who have visited Croatia on cruisers has doubled in the last four years, reaching a figure of almost one million passengers in 2009.
According to the data of last year there were 754 foreign cruise ships recorded on the Croatian coast, which is 8.3 percent or 68 trips less than the previous year, however, 5.3 percent more passengers arrived on these cruisers or a total of 989 000 of them.
