The pools of the «Salt pan of Pag» which stretch across a surface of around 2.5 million square meters, will soon be adapted for sightseeing and will thus become an attractive part of the tourist offer of the island of Pag. Before all, the island is famous for the beach Zrće and its clubs, which many of the world`s tourism journalists grade as the best places for entertainment among young tourists.

The production of salt in Pag was first mentioned in historical documents in the 9th century, but it is assumed that salt has been produced there for over two thousand years. Salt pools and pans are mentioned in numerous old documents and there is a tower in Pag called Skrivanat tower, which housed the headquaters of a record keeper who noted the amounts of salt exported by ships.

Salt production is an important part of the heritage of Pag, so the locals decided to put the attractive salt pools in the function of tourism. The reconstruction of the tracks used to transport salt in wagons from the pools in which it was gathered and crystallized, to the warehouses is also envisaged. With the reconstruction of the tracks and wagons, tourists will be able to do their sightseeing while riding on a train.

The salt pools have been a trademark of Pag for a long time and can be seen in all the promotional materials. Pag is also often referred to as the town of Salt.
