Vir - A holiday in an Austro-Hungarian lighthouse

23 May 2012

Vir
The island of Vir, one of the most developed islands in the Zadar County, recieves more and more tourists each year and the local authorities have announced the commencment of the five major projects which should, over the next three to four years, raise this destination to the highest level. The plan is, in fact, to construct a hotel, a campsite, a central square, a marina and to adapt a lighthouse. Lanterna is a protected, highest category building which is being turned into a five-star villa, which would accommodate its first guests in May this year under the official name "House of the Old Captain". The former lighthouse is located seven kilometers from the center of Vir in a beautiful pine forest, with an extremely attractive and a natural sandy-rocky beach and its own waterfront with mooring for small boats. The lighthouse was built on the west side of the island in 1881, during the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
