The Brothers Seljan

The Brothers Ivan and Stjepan Seljan were the greatest adventurers of their time. The Ethiopian emperor lavished them with honours, but the adventure of their lives awaited them in Brazil ...
From his early youth, Mirko Seljan travelled throughout Europe and in 1898, after his walk from St. Petersburg to Paris in 110 days, he won the title of Champion of Globetrotters. A few months later, with his younger brother Stjepan, he set off for Africa and Haile Selassie, the future Ethiopian emperor, was so fascinated by the brothers that in his late ruling years, he visited Karlovac, their hometown. The town of Karlovac is situated on four rivers which had inspired the Seljans to travel since their childhood.
Hungry for adventures, they continued their journey from Africa all the way to Brazil where, for the rest of their lives, they explored the Amazon, and also travelled almost the whole continent and founded the Croatian scientific mission (Mision Cientifica Croata). Mirko, in never-explained circumstances, disappeared in the wilderness of Peru, while Stjepan in Brazil built the family nest with Mary Aracy, his wife and teacher.
If you visit Karlovac, hometown of the brothers Seljan, it will be clear to you why from early childhood, these insatiable adventurers were so passionate about exploring riverbeds. Karlovac lies on four beautiful rivers that today, offer you opportunities for unforgettable rafting, canyoning or adventures of kayaking and canoeing. The river Korana emerges from one of the world's most beautiful national parks: Plitvice Lakes that you simply must visit to fall in love with their gorgeous waterfalls, to experience an adrenaline-fuelled boat ride through the rapids, travertine barriers and more than thirty waterfalls; an adventure that cannot be forgotten.
Rafting on the rapids and waterfalls of the untameably wild river Dobra many call the best in Croatia, while the remaining two rivers of Karlovac, Kupa and Mrežnica, also offer you plenty of adventures.
So, when you travel from Zagreb to the sea, turn off the highway and get to know the four rivers that led the Seljan brothers to the Amazon.
