Gornja Stubica

Gornja Stubica, the region of Croatian heroes, stretches from the valley of river Krapina to the peaks of Medvednica. The monument to Matija Gubac, the leader of bloody crushed peasant rebellion, is a work by the famous Croatian sculptor August Augustinčić and dominates the Stubica valley. There is also a monument here to the pilot Rudolf Perišin from the Croatian War of Independence. Every year, the event “Susret za Rudija” is held in his honour, which is a magnificent cultural and sporting occasion.

Right beside the parish church of sv. Juraj [St. George], with its beautifully landscaped environment and more than 50 different varieties of ornamental species, Gubec’s lime tree (a protected natural monument) has been growing for more than 400 years. The tree is famous for its legend about the peasant revolt and Gubec in 1573. The Peasants' Revolt Museum is located in the castle of noble family Oršić, which has beautiful green surroundings, and in the rural household of Lojzekova hiža and other catering establishments, you can enjoy local Zagorje culinary specialties (turkey with pasta “mlinci”, Zagorje strudel, jaglena kaša s čvrčkima (home-grinded corn porridge with greaves)...)
