Basic information

The tradition of “ljelja”, which in Gorjani is held on the Pentecost, dates back to the beginning of the last century. A group of village girls dressed up as kings and queens gather in front of the church at Mass after which they dance in a ring to the music of tambourine players. After leaving the church area, they go in a procession around the village and visit the homes of their fellow inhabitants who have said they want to be visited. The “ljelja” procession through the village results in a happy atmosphere, smiling faces and dancing. Normally a bag pipe player follows them, as well as two male beggars. When comparing today’s “ljeja” with photographs of the processions from the beginning of the 20th century, you can notice that today’s version of this tradition has not greatly changed from how it was at the beginning.
