Josip Jelačić is the Croatian ViceRoy whose name symbolizes the Croatian people’s aspiration toward autonomy and independence from imperial conquerors. After a turbulent life spent in the struggle for Croatian national interests, he was buried in 1859 in St. Joseph’s Chapel in Zaprešić. That is why the residents of Zaprešić celebrate the life and achievements of this great figure in our history on the same day they celebrate their town. The event, which in May commemorates the death, and in October celebrates the birth of Josip Jelačić, includes the Jelačić Ball, the hurdle riding tournament Josip Jelačić Cup and economic fair. Visitors can also take a tour of the New Jelačić Palace, a valuable example of preserved cultural and historic heritage.
